"These women, known as palenqueras, are from a small village called Palenque de San Basilio, about 30 miles from the walled city of Cartagena. Their ancestors fled Cartagena in the 16th century to found one of the first settlements of escaped slaves in the Americas. e Palenque language is a Creole language based on Spanish lexicon, but with the morpho-syntactical characteristics of the African continent’s autochthonous languages, especially Bantu."
