Assignment #12 – Ashley Sanborn

Premise: I wanted to draw birds, so for contrast I went with a tired old owl who just wants some sleep, and her cheery new neighbor who never stops singing. The silhouettes are ideas for some other bird friends they might have.

Design: The owl was a hard balance to strike between angry and tired, but ultimately I went with a big, bottom-heavy shape for that droopy feeling, and some eyebrows for the annoyed look. (I think her personality comes across better in the original sketch.) The songbird has a thinner, more gestural shape with some frilly bits to convey energy and happiness. I also used brighter colors in her design, and darker, less saturated ones for the owl.

Inspired by Justin Gerard— I didn't do his work justice, but he has great whimsical shapes that play with thick/thin, as well as soft coloring and shading with points of high contrast. He's also great at big, burly type characters, which is where the idea for this guy came from :)

Dr. Vanna Adamsen is a (xeno)biologist— her expertise is put to use when Earth is invaded by hostile lifeforms. Vanna's fascination with the creatures leads to her wanting to preserve them, and even coming to see them as better than humans. She ultimately accepts an offer to join them and become hybridized with their kind.

Assignment #5 – Ashley Sanborn

This is Fionnghan Ramsay. Scottish cuisine has always been based on its abundance of natural game, with a focus on simplicity and an absence of spices (as these were foreign and highly expensive). Poorer medieval Scots relied mainly on the byproducts of domesticated beasts for nutrition and would use up the entire animal, leading me to believe that Fionnghan here would be highly resourceful in making use of whatever ingredients he could find to innovate new, delicious recipes... a trait that, perhaps, would carry on to his descendants.
