Midterm Exam - Hands

While there are many theories about how to get good at hands, the best way is just to draw them alot and start memorizing them.

You will have a Midterm Exam on Thursday Oct 23rd at the beginning of class.  You will need to be able to draw 3 sets of hands (2 angles each = 6 total) from memory in a set amount of time - about 15 min.  There will also be a pop quiz sometime in the latter half of the semester to see that you havn't forgotten what you learned.

You may choose the 3 sets of hands that you will be tested on.  These should be hands that you deem useful.
I recommend:
 1) relaxed or at ease
2) holding something
3) Action/movement.
You will need to be able to draw each hand from 2 different angles

Draw the hand that is your Dominant hand (i.e. the hand you write or draw with.)

You will need to post a Page of the 3 Hand poses you are memorizing - this is how I will grade you exam.  These are the hands that you will memorize for the exam.  They can be stylized or realistic.  Your reference can be from the hand reference I posted, or from photographs.

Out of Class Assignment #6 - Hands

draw the 3D cubic shape of the palm and wrist (Thumb optional) over 10 of either your own drawings or a posted reference sheet (can be done in an alternate color, tracing paper, or photoshop) (see below for example).
AND
Draw 20 hands in your sketchbook and Post. These can be from observation, practicing your midterm or from the reference pages - you will get out of it what you put into it.

I researched the style of clothing more than the actual chefs themselves so my interpretation is probably a bit off. I'd say maybe she is a wealthy chef and can dress in more extravagant clothing. There were too many beautiful dresses not to give her one!

The Japanese Tengu, while known as a 'heavenly dog' according to folklore, is actually a spirit comprised of both human and avian features. Many stories of Tengu cast them as evil or malevolent, yet contrary to popular belief, Tengu are not evil (they are known to be very mischievous, however). They are revered in the martial arts as competent warriors as well as spiritual priests that dwell in mountainous regions. Japanese farmers once sacrificed a fish called 'Okoze' (or Stonefish) to these spirits as an offering for a prosperous day of work. Some Tengu, being very curious and sometimes annoying, were said to lead people away on their journey, only to return them near dead or on the verge of sanity. To top it all off, some Tengu made unfortunate travelers eat animal dung through a series of cunning trickery.

Food: As many know, the cow is seen as sacred in India. Because of long-held beliefs, and because of increasing animal sacrifices, many in ancient India became vegetarian. India, for centuries, has also been one of the main global exporters of spices, the most popular being: saffron, cardamom, curry, GINGER (!), cinnamon, pepper, cumin, and coriander.

In India, we usually think of the women's clothing to be the most intricate, but actually, through out history the men's costumes were more elaborate, and changed over time; the women's sari has not evolved considerably. In general, though, these costly outfits were for "higher" castes, and not a kitchen's assistant.

My character is a quiet boy that often doesn't tend to his duties as diligently as he should; he's distracted, and often dreaming. He wishes he wasn't the assistant cook. Here, he is distractedly grinding spices (most likely curry).

FACT:
In rural Tahitian societies, young women are not allowed to eat food that has been prepared for adult men. This is because they believe that male interaction with the spiritual world could have residual effects that would pass, via the food into the young vulnerable women.

One cool fact about these Quechuan people, is that they are the modern desendants of the Incas. Their shoes are made out of tires, and a specific tribe called the Q'ero live in the Andes mountains at altitudes of 13200 ft. (Provo is at 4500ft). These are the pastoral people who raise llamas and alpacas!
Some traditional food includes corn, potatoes, cuy (guinea pig), alpaca, and yes, roasted frogs.

Often, the Inuit's food came from hunting. The hunter usually kills the animal then immediately eats right after. Hunting is the main part of their food preparation, which is why I chose to portray my character hunting rather than cooking.
