Rachel Sackett's Late stuff

I can't find my straights vs curves

Dutch Lady Chef

I really only put up the second one because I like her dickey pattern most. But I like the angry lady more.
Wooden shoes in the Netherlands are actually only really used for tough work. Someone like a chef who spends a lot of time inside would actually wear buckle shoes. The Dutch traditionally eat a lot of potatoes and will mix in applesauce into potatoes and vegetables.

I don't have any idea how to change the orientation of these, they're correct on my computer.

Melissa Vance-Assignment #6

Line Version
Shaded Version
Evil Geneticist: Genetically modified as a fetus, by the (now deceased mad scientist) Evil Dr. Morbert. He was raised by said doctor as his prodigy, being the only experiment to survive. As a result our satyrical friend truly believes himself to be the next step in human evolution, thanks again to Morberts brainwashing. The evil geneticist now wants to change all of humanity into half human/animal hybrids, believing that humanity is too limited in itself. His genius intellect has made it easy for him to surpass human genetics to the point where he is very close to his breakthrough. He then plans on releasing his modifications into the water supply where it will directly affect the human genome, changing it to a "superior" version of what it is.
He also has a lovely pet lion-cat which he modified himself. It is his only friend. He's very lonely and looking for a female companion if anyone is interested.

Assignment #6 - Villain

Design an Evil Scientist

There are 3 Parts to this Assignment
1) StoryWrite a 1-2 Paragraph (please no longer) character analysis in which you address his/her Persona, life, motive, ideology. (in other words: why he is a villain, His goal, his personality, how he gets what he wants.)
2) Creativity - make sure your design supports your story- this is what makes your character unique and different from all other evil scientist.  On the creative part - visually show what specific type of Scientist this is (Biology, chemistry, nuclear physics, virology etc.)
3) Value - Provide 2 versions of your character. 1 line only, AND 1 with Value.  Value should just be flat - like we did in class. Not shading.

**Bring a hard copy to class**
Post all WIP, and Skeleton Drawover to Blog

*Hint on Value - I recommend doing value digitally in photoshop so that you can experiment like we did together in class.  If using traditional media, be sure to scan your drawing first and make several printouts to experiment with.

Value

"A lot of attention is given to color, and while of course color is very important, in my opionon, VALUE is even more important. If you composition is working in value, you can use almost any color and it will work reasonably well.  Good color will be icing on the cake."
Maurice Nobel

Value - White, Black, Grey

if dealing with color, you also have:
Tints:  colors lightened with white
Shades: Colors darkened with black

"The eye is naturally guided to the area of highest contrast, the area of darkest dark against lightest light.... As designere we can use this fact to make characters READ (made visible to the audience) even in a complex background setup.

"good use of light and dark is the first important step in learning to use color." He cited Rockwell Kent as a great example of how to use value.
Many have asked... "What exactly does stacking value mean?" In simple terms, it describes the method of putting an element in a picture against something darker or lighter than itself so that it "reads" easily. In these Kent examples, every single element in his picture can be seen clearly in spite of using a limited value range.

Novices will often confuse the viewer by splitting the focus in a design, having too many areas of fucus competinf for the eye's attention. This greatly weakens any design statement they might have.

Make sure you have a strong focus - There is no question where the eye should look.  This is a dramatic high contrast example

Use Value to STRENGTHEN your design

STORY - what values and lighting Strengthens the story of your design

Have a Nice RANGE of Values - No Muddyness - control where the eye is drawn

Use Value to define the dimensionality of forms

Midterm Exam - Hands

While there are many theories about how to get good at hands, the best way is just to draw them alot and start memorizing them.

You will have a Midterm Exam on Thursday Oct 23rd at the beginning of class.  You will need to be able to draw 3 sets of hands (2 angles each = 6 total) from memory in a set amount of time - about 15 min.  There will also be a pop quiz sometime in the latter half of the semester to see that you havn't forgotten what you learned.

You may choose the 3 sets of hands that you will be tested on.  These should be hands that you deem useful.
I recommend:
 1) relaxed or at ease
2) holding something
3) Action/movement.
You will need to be able to draw each hand from 2 different angles

Draw the hand that is your Dominant hand (i.e. the hand you write or draw with.)

You will need to post a Page of the 3 Hand poses you are memorizing - this is how I will grade you exam.  These are the hands that you will memorize for the exam.  They can be stylized or realistic.  Your reference can be from the hand reference I posted, or from photographs.
